MSE 850 Reflection

Lesson 1 (14 Jan)

I have heard about TBL and find the process interesting. Felt that this structured form of small-group learning may benefit older children or adult learner, I like the concept of TBL and may implement them I conduct workshops for my colleagues.

My other takeaways include many classroom strategies like "3 Before me" and ICT Classroom strategies like "Apple up.  I also learned new polling tools like Metimeter.

The five areas to work on to engage the students" Movement", Musics, Social Activity, Novelty and Laughter is not new to me, but I have not used Musics in my lessons before. I have used YouTube videos before my lecture to help the students to settle down. The ideas of having different sensory experience are also quite similar to what I have learned in "Brain Break" Activity to help the students to energize and refocus their attention.

I have also learnt about the 3Rs of a lesson. The Relevance of what the students need to know, can make rigor possible; and also allow students to co-construct and learn social skills.  Successful teachers can use the 3R Principle to focus on student interests, learning styles, and aptitudes, and this will help the students to learn better.

Lesson 2 ( 21 Jan)

I did not meet up  with Elise in NIE as I had a school cluster meeting. I had not written any blog before and I decided to figure this out myself. Fortunately, it is not too difficult.

Lesson 3 (28 Jan)

Today, I was again late for the lesson due to heavy downpour, but managed to complete the iRAT AND tRAT. I did not do too well for the test, but will try to better next time.

Learnt about how different forms of media can be used to support learning. After the lesson,  I went to my students' P5 Camp at Jalan Bahtera Campsite and spotted an error on the sign in the sick bay. On the spot, I  decided to take a selfie with it.

The next day, I used the photo to ask my daughter who is in P4 to identify the mistake in the photo. She was not able to pick up the error and was so frustrated that she said that the only mistake is me appearing in the picture (LOL). Anyway, it did provoke her to think and we also had a good conversation about phonics and grammar. I will share this experience with my English Teacher.

Lesson 4 (Communications, Screencast, Polling)

This week, I have learnt many useful things.

1) I have a better understanding of how the iRAT and tRAT worked. I also agree that TBL is not about learning the  content, it is about supporting group discussion and collaboration.

2) I have learnt from my classmate on how they use ClassDojo and also learnt about new apps like  Class123 and  Google Classroom.

3) I have never used the accessibility functions in my iPhone. There are many potential of using the features iPad together with Apps to support the learning of students with special needs. I will share with my colleagues handling these students and encourage them to use mobile devices to engage them.

4) I have also learnt how to address our students with special learning needs with first person in mind. Words and language are powerful tools that can "make" or "break"  relationship. Learning how to address students properly can build positive Teacher-Parent Relationship and Teacher-Students Relationship.

5) Although I have used Screencast and polling tools, I have also learnt many useful tools. I am now trying PowToon which I have not tried before.

6) There are also many apps shared in the Edomo, I will have to spend some time to go through them.

Lesson 5(Most Valuable Lesson)

I have learnt many Apps to day and uncover some features that I have not explored before.

1) My Maps: Students can use these apps to keep track of the places on their learning journey. They can also make custom maps to for thir exploration on overseas learning journey. I will learn this Apps and share my teacher chaperons and studentsto use this apps.

2) goo.gl with statistics: I am familiar with URL Shorterner, but have never explored this function of goo.gl. I had always shared online reading articles with my colleagues, this may be a good way to track how many actually read the articles using the link I have sent.

3) i-nigma QR Code: This a good QR apps.

4) EduCreations: This is a good whitboarding apps. I also use the whiteboard apps in Google Hangout to discuss with colleagues and students. I  will share this with my HOD ICT.

Today, our group also has great fun making the video. Our video is to show a storytelling technique and I am glad to show my group mates on how to use Camtasia.

There will be no lesson next week. I will spend my time to work on how I would like to apply learning in my future page.

Lesson 7 : Content Curation and Twitter

Have used Flipboard and Scoop.it. Really nice to have all the articles gathered in one place for reading.

Lesson 8 and 9 :

Leaning many search tools and apps that will be useful. In lesson 9, we have summarized how each tool can be applied to teaching and learning. Also learnt about Flubaroo and Kahoot.

Lesson 10: Augmented Reality

Our group is elated with a full score for tRAT for the first time.

I have tried Ausrama (https://www.aurasma.com/) before to teach students to teach students organic chemistry.

There is also a cool app that I have tried before which is a Chinese app (http://www.woerxi.icoc.cc/)

Types of AR apps learn today and I will try tonight:

1)Transparent Earth
2) Aurasma
3) Action Movies FX ( My trial is shown below)

Lesson 11:
I intend to show how I use iMovies in iPad to create videos and may be i will be bring along Swivl to show how to create teaching video.
